The International Psychotherapy Institute brings mental health professionals and faculty together to study with international contributors at the leading edge of the field. This weekend conference sees Professor Juliet Mitchell revisiting her bestselling book Psychoanalysis and Feminism fifty years after its original publication to explore how the ideas there remain central to our understanding of the condition of women today and current state of feminism, as well as the value of psychoanalytic thinking in political thought and action.

To mark the 50th anniversary of her landmark publication, Professor Juliet Mitchell revisits Psychoanalysis and Feminism to explore how these ideas remain central to an understanding of the condition of women today, the development and current state of feminism, and the value of psychoanalytic thinking in political thought and action.

In this lecture, Mitchell argues that the mother’s prohibition of her toddler attacking a new or expected sibling is a rite of passage from infancy to childhood. This is a foundational force structuring our social world.
